Mindful Rest After Birth

Writer's picture: Nasreen AllenNasreen Allen

Your body spent months growing another human, now what?

Many cultures adhere to the idea of offering postpartum rest - 40 days of lying in. What this means is allowing yourself time with this new life - your new life & the baby that is now a part of your world.

Giving yourself & baby this time & space can mean quiet moments of rest, allowing mindfulness - like listening to all the sounds your baby makes, meditating, reading, journaling, whatever you need to integrate into this new realm & allow your body proper rest. It may mean telling others that you need this time & space to be alone with your baby. It may mean that you ask others for help with cooking, cleaning, watching & caring for baby while your shower or nap.

For me, this time meant connecting with my partner differently. Cooing over our new baby. Listening to calming music & just relaxing as she nursed. Getting in some yoni tea steams. Reading & meditating. And when we felt ready, going on a quiet walk, just the 3 of us.

Whatever you feel you need, ask for it. Don't apologize. This time is fleeting. Allowing for this special time to connect with your little one will provide your body & mind proper nourishment well into your life.

Wishing you wellness,

Nasreen 'Nikki' xx
